This privacy policy describes what information Revise Notes (the "Site") collects, how we use it, and what rights you have in relation to it. If there are any terms in this policy that you do not agree with, please discontinue use of the Site.

1. What information do we collect?

Revise Notes does not have user accounts, registration, or login. We do not collect your name, email address, or any other personal information you directly provide.

The following information is collected automatically or by our third-party partners:

  • IP address — collected server-side solely to enforce per-IP rate limits (via Upstash Redis). IP addresses are not stored or logged beyond the rate-limit window.

2. Your uploaded documents and study data

Your raw files (PDFs, Word documents, text files) are extracted locally in your browser and the raw file is never uploaded to our servers. All generated content — revision notes, quiz questions, flashcards, ask history, and text embeddings — is stored solely in your device's local browser storage (IndexedDB) and is never stored on our servers.

However, when you use an AI feature, the extracted plain text of your documents is transmitted to third-party AI providers to generate responses. This is how the AI works — the raw file binary stays on your device, but the text content is sent. Specifically:

  • Notes (Gemini): the full extracted text of your documents (or a representative sample for very large uploads) is sent to Google Gemini.
  • Quiz & Flashcards (OpenAI): sampled passages from your documents are sent to OpenAI to generate questions and cards.
  • Ask (OpenAI): only the most relevant passages (retrieved via semantic search) are sent to OpenAI to answer your question.
  • Embeddings (OpenAI): each text chunk is sent to OpenAI to generate a vector used for local semantic search — stored in your browser, not our servers.

These API calls are made server-side through our infrastructure to keep API keys secure and are not logged or retained by us beyond the duration of each request. The providers used are:

Upload limits apply: approximately 150 pages per file and 300 pages per topic. Documents exceeding these limits are rejected before any content is transmitted to AI providers. We strongly advise against uploading documents containing sensitive personal information, financial records, credentials, confidential business or legal documents, or medical records.

3. How do we use your information?

The limited information we have access to (IP address) is used only to:

  • Enforce per-IP rate limits to protect the service from abuse.
  • Keep the Site safe and secure.
  • Respond to legal requests and prevent harm.
  • Enforce our terms, conditions, and policies.

4. Will your information be shared with anyone?

We do not sell, trade, or rent your information to third parties. We only share information to comply with laws, to protect your rights, or to operate our service. The third-party services the Site uses are:

  • AI Processing: Google (Gemini), OpenAI — receive extracted plain text from your documents to generate AI responses. Raw files are never transmitted.
  • Rate Limiting: Upstash Redis — receives your IP address server-side to enforce request limits.

We may also disclose information where required by law, in response to a court order, or where necessary to prevent fraud or protect against threats to safety.

5. How long do we keep your information?

We do not persistently store any personal information. Your IP address is only held in memory for the duration of the rate-limit window and is then discarded. Your study content lives solely in your browser's local storage and is never on our servers. Clearing your browser's site data for this domain permanently deletes all such content.

6. How do we keep your information safe?

We have implemented appropriate technical and organisational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, please remember that we cannot guarantee that the internet itself is 100% secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from the Site is at your own risk. You should only access the services within a secure environment.

7. Do we collect information from minors?

Revise Notes is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from a child under 18, please contact us at [email protected].

8. Your privacy rights

In some regions (like the European Economic Area), you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws, including the right to request access to, rectification or erasure of your personal information, and the right to object to its processing. Because we collect almost no personal data, most of these rights have limited practical scope in relation to our Site.

If you are resident in the European Economic Area and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you have the right to complain to your local data protection supervisory authority. You can find their contact details at ec.europa.eu/justice.

9. Controls for do-not-track features

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. No uniform technology standard for recognising and implementing DNT signals has been finalised. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Policy.

10. Do California residents have specific privacy rights?

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, also known as the "Shine The Light" law, permits California residents to request and obtain from us, once a year and free of charge, information about categories of personal information (if any) we disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes. Because we do not collect or share personal information for direct marketing, there is nothing to disclose under this provision. If you have questions, please contact us using the details below.

11. Do we make updates to this policy?

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date and will be effective as soon as it is accessible. If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we may notify you either by prominently posting a notice of such changes or by directly sending you a notification. We encourage you to review this privacy policy frequently to be informed of how we are protecting your information.
